The Secret Ingredient to Your Healing Journey; The Power of a Positive Mindset
“The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” -Buddha
Have you ever heard this before? What we think can have the power to make us better, or worse. Crazy right?
My endocrinologist, the doctor who used to help me manage my thyroid condition, once told me not to bother with further blood testing, because I’d always have autoimmune disease, what was the point? That is the perfect example of a limiting belief. Noticed how I mentioned this doctor in the past tense. It was time to move on.
Today I’m sharing the power of mindset and mastering your thoughts and how it helped me find the path to healing.
Just because someone tells you something, doesn't mean it's the end all be all. Even if it’s a doctor, teacher, your boss, or someone with authority. There is usually more to the story. This is especially true when it comes to your health. If something doesn’t feel right, it likely isn’t and you owe it to yourself to dig further if you want to change your current outcomes. You don’t need a medical degree to understand that you know your body better than anyone else— remember that! No one else is living in your body but you!
When my son was going through his issues with Eczema, his pediatrician kept saying, “oh ,it’s just dry skin, use lots of lotion”. Seeing my son suffer, and itch like crazy, I knew something was off and this was much bigger than he was writing it off to be. He never once suggested it could be food related, and he never said it was eczema. I suspected it, and it took a day when DJ had to see another doctor that she confired it was eczema. Even then, all they did was prescribe creams. My son was up all night, crying and scratching, begging us to rub his legs so he could sleep. We were all sleep deprived. He had to wear gloves so he wouldn't make himself bleed. I wasn't going to accept this, as a mom, I couldn't. I had to take it into my own hands to get the answers we deserved because there had to be a reason why he was going through this. His body was screaming out, “something is wrong”! I decided that I knew what was best for him and started looking into alternate forms of treatment and new opinions. After lots of time, frustration, dietary changes, money spent on supplements and creams, countless doctors visits, and the help of a nutritionist, we finally found answers.
When DJ was 10 months we had found an allergist who confirmed he had SEVERAL food allergies, this was the first time we felt hopeful. That we had the tools we needed to finally help DJ heal. This experience was the lightbulb moment. I needed to completely change my mindset on EVERYTHING health related. I had to be the advocate for my family's health. So when I was diagnosed with my own health issues I knew I had to search for answers if I wanted to feel better, and believe that I could feel better.
Why am I sharing this personal story?
Well, I don't want you to have to wait for a health crisis in your family or something negative to happen before you take action. I want to save you time, money, and stress by sharing what allowed things to click for me. It may not have to do with your health, this is just my best personal example. Because of this mindset shift I was open to other ways I could improve my life overall. Think deeply, is there something in your life you want to change, or improve? Do you know you have the power to do this by simply changing your attitude about it? It’s ok if it’s something small, but I want to challenge you to figure out what it is and write it down. How you can you re-write the story you’ve told yourself about that particular issue, or habit? How can you begin taking steps to change that self narrative, today?
According to Medium.com
“If you want a mindset that leads to a successful life you have to take a look at the thoughts that you are currently thinking. Are your thoughts a reflection of the type of person you want to become? Are they pushing you towards the goals that you want to achieve? If not, then you need to change them. Your thoughts need to be an exact reflection of who you want to be and the life that you want to live”.

Another amazing tool you can use to shift your mindset are affirmations! I will be the first to admit, I thought these were silly and weird. As a Christian, some of these affirmations can tend to be a little too inner focused, in a “be your own God” kind of way that leaves me uncomfortable. So if this is a reservation for you, use scripture! There are so many awesome Bible verses reminding us of Gods promises that can remind us of our value, I’ve included 5 below so read on!
Try with one or two a day and build and see how much more positive your inner dialogue becomes!
Try these three simple ones today from The Blissful Mind:
I give myself permission to do what is right for me.
I love my body for all it can do.
I am good at helping others (fill in the blank).
